A crime-free ordinance that could penalize landlords and their tenants for police calls is one of several bills IAR lobbyists are monitoring as the state’s General Assembly enters its last few weeks.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia Fields, was originally designed to prohibit municipalities from enacting ordinances that penalize landlords or tenants for police calls.
IAR supported the original concept.
But the bill was amended to permit municipal ordinances that penalize landlords or tenants but allow calls related to domestic or sexual violence. It passed the Senate unanimously last week.
IAR opposes the bill in its current form because it may cause the proliferation and validation of these kinds of municipal ordinances. The House sponsor is Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, who has been involved with this issue in prior years.
