Flooding can cause more damage than any other weather-related event, and as a result the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is reminding Illinois residents to take precautions before flooding strikes.
As part of Flood Safety Awareness Week in Illinois, IEMA suggested residents:
- Stay informed about storms by using NOAA Weather Alert Radios,
- Talk to your insurance agent about flood insurance since flood damage isn’t covered by homeowners policies,
- Take photos of clothing, flooring, light fixtures, appliances and other belongings that could be damaged during a flood,
- Check to see if your sump pump is working,
- Install a battery-operated backup for your sump pump in case of power failure,
- Install a water alarm that lets you know if water is accumulating in your basement,
- Clear debris from gutters and downspouts,
- Raise water heaters, heat pumps and air conditioning units onto platforms that are at least a foot above potential flood waters,
- Store copies of irreplaceable documents such as birth certificates, passports, deeds, in a safe, dry place,
- Develop and review with your family an emergency evacuation plan and
- Include your pets in your safety plan.
