The Illinois Association of REALTORS® issued on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, a Call for Action urging members to tell lawmakers a proposal on taxing advertising is a bad idea.

IAR is part of a coalition of groups who are concerned that a tax of as much as 10 percent on advertising and advertising services would hurt small businesses and inflict damage to Illinois’ economy.

IAR is particularly concerned about the tax proposal because so many of the association’s members rely heavily on advertising to market properties listed by their clients. At a time when the housing market is just recovering from the recession, it makes little sense to do anything to chill the economic rebound.

Loretta Alonzo, IAR past president and managing broker of Century 21 Affiliated in LaGrange Park, put it this way: “As a REALTOR®, I spend a lot of money advertising because I know it’s one of the most important ways I have of serving my clients. Adding a 10 percent advertising tax will drive up the cost of doing business and ultimately would hurt my clients.”

Help stop this proposal before it gains momentum and hurts your business.
