In his annual state budget address Wednesday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker proposed a series of temporary tax breaks including a one-time property tax rebate for qualifying Illinois homeowners.

The measure, which is just a proposal at this point and would have to be approved by Illinois legislators, could provide a rebate of 5 percent of property taxes paid (up to $300) to homeowners eligible for the income tax credit.

The rebate proposal is part of what Pritzker called his Illinois Family Relief Plan, which would include freezing the state’s 1 percent sales tax on groceries for one year and freezing a scheduled cost of living increase to the state’s motor fuel tax.
