The Dearborn Realtist Board, which is the Chicago Chapter of the NationalAssociation of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), came together in honor of Black History month at the Chicago Urban League yesterday and hosted author, Beryl Satter.  Ms. Satter, a Chicago native, wrote “Family Properties: How the Struggle Over Race and Real Estate Transformed Chicago and Urban America”.  This book was inspired by the work of her late father, Mark J. Satter, who became passionate about the plight of black homeowners when he discovered in 1957 the pattern of overcharging this population for their properties through speculation, contact sales and subsequent white flight.

Some Chicago neighborhoods still struggle to recover and Chapter President Tracey Taylor stressed how important and powerful this program was to highlight Black History month and “the core mission and purpose of the Dearborn Realist board to champion the cause for democracy and equality in housing.”

Ms. Satter was happy to be able to share her book and stated that she learned more this afternoon than she actually shared.  Through listening to a robust discussion on ideas to revitalize these areas and rebuild community she said “I heard more exciting ideas in 10 minutes here than I have in the last several years!”
