Illinois REALTORS® lobbyists were prepared on Wednesday to speak against bills which would end a state ban on Rent Control.
But while HB 255 and HB 2192 were scheduled for a hearing in the House Judiciary Civil Law Committee, neither piece of legislation one was called for debate.
Illinois REALTORS® have been vocal in their opposition for the bills and two others filed in the General Assembly which would allow Rent Control if passed. A Call for Action issued has already garnered more than 6,100 responses which have been sent to lawmakers.
In the House, bill sponsors have until March 29 to call the bill for committee debate. The Senate deadline for committee debate is March 22.
Illinois REALTORS® has long pointed out the dangers of implementing Rent Control in the state. Such a move would drive away investors who might build affordable housing, and the plan would add layers of bureaucracy and potential tax costs to property owners.
