REALTORS® interested in serving the real estate needs of all Americans can view the 2020 State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) report from the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) and its Chicago chapter, our industry partner, the Dearborn REALTISTS®.
The report identifies the challenges Black consumers face in achieving the American Dream of home ownership, such as: higher rejection rates for mortgage applications, credit score practices that can skew or widen the gap between Black and non-Hispanic white borrowers, and the negative impact of COVID-19 on the health and incomes. The report also recommends remedies for some of these problems.
The report notes that the gap between Black and non-Hispanic white homeowners was 26.8 in 1960, eight years before the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. Today, that gap is 26 percentage points.
