The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has partnered with the Perception Institute to provide training that can help REALTORS® identify implicit biases and find ways to overcome them.
By discovering their own implicit biases, REALTORS® can avoid treating people based on stereotypes and better serve consumers with fairness and without discrimination, according to the film, “Bias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing.”
The 53-minute film explains how the unconscious mind can prevent people from acting in ways that mirror their values. It cites a 2019 Newsday investigation of race, ethnicity and real estate in Long Island, NY. Learn how biases are formed, how they affect empathy for others and sometimes lead to unconscious behaviors in people who consider themselves fair. Learn strategies that can override bias and convey respect, ensure fairness and improve business relationships.
REALTORS® who want to learn more can take the implicit bias test from Harvard University. This interactive test runs you through a series of exercises and gives you results on what, if any, underlying biases you may have. There are several bias tests to choose from including race, sexuality, age and religion.
