In the context of rising coronavirus infection rates and shifting guidance from public officials in Illinois, many REALTORS® and clients may be asking: “Is it safe to have showings or open houses?”
The most recent statements from Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot are advisories and guidance based on health data. Health experts in Illinois have suggested voluntary “stay-at-home” and “work-from-home” restrictions, with many top health officials cautioning against mixing households. Illinois REALTORS® is watching and will communicate if the governor or local elected officials issue mandates that impact the industry.
One of the reasons real estate was deemed an essential business earlier this year was because of the overwhelming adherence to health and safety practices by REALTORS®. At this critical time, it is important to revisit those practices with a keen eye to prevent the spread of the virus.
For instance, REALTORS® should consider prioritizing virtual open houses and showings. If clients insist on in-person showings or open houses, and REALTORS® are comfortable with them, best practices should be followed to minimize potential exposure.
Illinois REALTORS® will closely monitor any new coronavirus mandates that could impact the industry and will update members. The Illinois REALTORS® COVID-19 page continues to be updated with FAQs and breaking industry news.
