Chicago is poised to begin requiring its largest buildings to report energy consumption.

A Chicago City Council vote could come today on the ordinance which passed the council’s Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards. But the rules came with opposition from the Chicago Association of REALTORS®.

The program, if passed, mandates properties with more than 50,000 square feet of space to tally energy usage. The information would would be shared with the public.

IAR’s Brian Bernardoni said the proposal could eventually lead to costly rules governing energy usage, He also questioned why the Chicago association he represents wasn’t consulted in the early stages of crafting the policy.

Said Bernardoni:

“Creating green buildings should not create red ink.”

CAR sought a voluntary pilot program and asked for a final vote delay.
